About Us

St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Primary School

St. Augustine’s RC Primary School is more than just a place of learning; it’s a home where we nurture dreams, celebrate achievements, and build lasting connections. We take pride in the diversity of our school and provide a climate of respect and acceptance for everyone. Apart from academic excellence and achieving their potential, our children must have good character – knowing and doing what is right, having a heart for others and being confident that they will succeed despite all odds.

Our History

St Augustine’s was originally a convent for the Holy Cross sisters who had their mother house in Germany. With the pandemic in 1918 the convent had to star to take care of the many orphans living around Parow. The Orphange was opened and subsequently the school at the beginning of the 20th century.

In the 20th Century the establishment housed a Teacher college for girl after grade 10. The primary school up unto grade 7 and the special training school . Many teachers came from this college. St Augustines was a school for the elite , doctors children, teachers children , social workers children.

Because of the group areas act the school in Parow closed in 1965. A new convent was built in Modderdam road and the sisters once again set out to rebuild the establishment. Because of the location the school became within reach of many more families, opening its gates to the marginalised.

The teaching in Home Language became difficult. Many learners struggled with English and Afrikaans. More recently the computer lab was set up where learners are taught the necessary skills. Mother Bernarda was the founder of our vision and mission and today we still teach learners holistically and courage to carry their cross and finding salvation in Jesus Christ.

We continue to stand as a school that is special, because Jesus Christ is the centre of our school and the values and attitudes of Christ are modelled by the staff, learners and the school community. We serve a loving, kind and gracious God whose Grace and Mercy has been sufficient for us.
